How a piece is made

From the bench to your table

  1. The sheet becomes a vessel

    A flat disc of copper is raised over a stake and struck thousands of times, until the walls thin and the shape appears. No mould and no press — the form comes from the hammer alone, which is why the surface of a finished piece is never quite flat.

  2. The surface is marked

    Chasing tools press the pattern in from the front while the metal is packed from behind. It is slow work, done by eye rather than to a template, and it is the reason no two pieces catch the light in quite the same way.

  3. It returns to the table

    Filled at night, poured at dawn. The vessel does the rest of its work in a kitchen, and the patina it takes on over the years is simply the record of having been used.
